ColorWash A Class of Her Own

“You appeared on Channel U’s Ladies Night!,” the students of Work Force Skills Qualifications diploma, School of Business & Accountancy, Ngee Ann Polytechnic, exclaimed excitedly as over 16 of them stepped into ColorWash@Mandarin Gallery. These students visited ColorWash’s flagship outlet as part of their course work on “Setting up a Retail and/or Franchise Business” and were hosted on-site by Gemma Gil, Managing Director of ColorWash Pte Ltd. Once inside, these budding entrepreneurs toured the 600sq ft space, and posed numerous questions, from staffing and training, to the types of machinery used, the rate of customer return, and even the business modelling of overseas expansion.

In addition to mentoring these students on the business side of things, Gemma shared also ColorWash’s vision of improving public and personal hygiene through better care for personal accessories such as bags and shoes. But it was her personal accounts on her journey towards becoming an entrepreneur that especially moved the students. Gemma and the students chatted casually yet intently on the importance of having a strong passion for their chosen profession, building relevance to the customers, and having a commitment to see things through. The group discussed personal values on the subject of clean and reuse, and how they can pursue personal values, business excellence and contribute towards conservation efforts – a topic close to everyone’s hearts. The often tricky topic of achieving and maintaining high standards of service were explored as well. No topics were taboo as Gemma related personal challenges o f raising two young boys while running a retail business. Gemma shared also how she managed to maintain quick cash flow in a retail environment, and about inspiring her staff and building rapport with business partners, and doing it all with a great big smile on her face and in her heart.

After what seemed like the shortest two hours, the group bid farewell, generously inspired and genuinely touched.
